Creatures From El


'Creatures from El', the sculptural production of artist Ellen Jewett, was conceived of as a means of rapid sculptural exploration that incorporated an understanding of animal physiology with a love of the fantastic, grotesque and absurd. The consequence has been a prolific output of original creatures, organic scenes and complex narratives. Each piece Ellen creates is handmade and painted with no more tools than fingers and a paint brush. By virtue of this primal process, each creation is completely unique and produced in a fluid, intuitive manner. Although a few pieces are from preconceived ideas, and others made under the directive of commissioners, most are created with complete spontaneity and find their own forms as they are sculpted. Many who have observed Ellen working comment in amazement on her ability to hold eye contact and conversations or even read whilst her hands sculpt almost intuitively.
