Context - The Times of the Event

One of the precursors to live-broadcast video-streaming, which aided in its formation, was that of audio-streaming, spearheaded by RealAudio; one of the first programs to change the format of internet radio from merely another set of files to download to a more real-time version. "Instead of making you download a complete audio file prior to listening, RealAudio uses audio streaming: It plays the sound as it downloads. Its audio-on-demand technology reduces the wait to hear a program to just a few seconds. Because RealAudio uses strong audio compression, you can listen to audio by using only a 14.4 Kbps modem. So you don't need to wait to download 15MB to hear a radio program." (Savetz) This new technology signified a desire for continuous connective entertainment, where previously, waiting patiently to download whole files had sufficed.
